Man Repeller staff,
My name is Emily Haney, I'm a 17 year old high school student living in a very football obsessed region of the U.S. --you guessed it, or maybe not; Texas. My sophomore year in high school I realized I didn't care at all about the 60 million dollars my school spent in funding to make a stadium for our boys in blue to kick a ball around a field. I cared about my shoes, and my jewelry collection, and what Alexa Chung was going to wear to NYFW. I learned who Karl Lagerfield was, all about the new Givenchy bag, I chopped off my hair, channeled my then 15 year old Blair Waldorf and eventually started writing a blog. I always knew I had a love for fashion, maybe it was all the Audrey Hepburn movies I watched growing up, but all I know for sure is that somewhere between Carrie Bradshaw and The Devil Wears Prada, I was engulfed in it.
After my sophomore year of high school, my family and I took a trip to Europe, and let me tell you how it feels to stand head to toe next to the Eiffel Tour for the very first time. It feels like life didn't start until that moment. And yet, the entire trip all I could think was "I'm dressed all wrong." Surrounded by thousands of French women dressed in the latest runway essentials, draped from head to toe in minimalistic tones, effortlessly swooning all pedestrians with their long legs and perfect skin -- I became so envious, I was inspired. What a wonderful thing to be French, and what an even more wonderful thing to be able to try.
After I came back from Europe I started to get really into my blogging, and as I explored the depths of google I came across you. Man Repeller. Or more importantly, Leandra. My style soul-mate. I don't think there's anyone out there that I have more respect for fashion wise than you. It's iconic really. Genius. A blog that not only represents my style as a whole but also empowers other women to be themselves and be proud of it. After realizing I wasn't alone in my boyfriend Jean and shoulder pad collection-- I was hooked. Not a day goes by that I'm not checking your blog twice a day. Last year I got a position on my school newspaper staff-- the Eagle Angle. I write the fashion column. They call me "Sincerely, Stylish." And I'm no Leandra Medine but I sure do try my best.
I don't really know why I felt the need to type this long email that more than likely no one will ever read besides myself -- but I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm a senior in high school, with plans to go to college and get a marketing major that i hopefully never have to use. Because if I can get paid money to write for something as great as Man Repeller, I will be able to go home at night and tell myself "I made it."
Thank you for existing, and inspiring and humoring, and most importantly, thank you for writing.
